A few days ago it was announced that GIA will be hosting one of two Final X meets. The date is June 3rd and will have some of the best men's and women wrestlers in the world competing for a spot on Team USA that will be wrestling for world medals in Serbia in September. Qualifying for the world team is kind of confusing so I thought you might like an explanation so you might consider attending Final X.

There are 3 international divisions of wrestling: Men's Freestyle, Women's Freestyle and Men's Greco-Roman. While olympics is stupidly limited to 6 weight classes, most tournaments, including the world championships each year have 10. They are listed as kilos, not pounds, but are easily converted, lol. Final X is a best 2 out of 3 matchup where the winner makes the world team and gets to represent team USA. This year they are doing half of the weights (5 for each of the divisions) in Stillwater and half the following week in NY. So essentially you will see the 2 best American Wrestlers in 15 different weights/divisions battling it out.

So, if the quality of the wrestling doesn't excite you, maybe some familiar names will. These are the weight classes that will be wrestling in Stillwater and those that have already made it. The other spots will be filled by the winners of the World Team Trials held in May. Several OSU wrestlers have qualified, or will likely qualify, for the World Team Trials in the coming weeks, including Carter Young, Jordan Oliver and Alex Dieringer, so it is possible to see some other Pokes at Final X. Here are the current ones we KNOW will be in Stillwater (as long as they accept their place/weight class). If it is blank that means there is no auto qualifier and the top 2 from World Team trials will wrestle off at Final X.

Men's Freestyle:

57 KG (125 pounds): Thomas Gilman (2021 World Gold, 2020 Olympic Bronze, 2017 World Silver)
61 KG (134): Daton Fix (2021 World Silver)
70 KG (154):
92 KG (202): J'Den Cox (2021 World Bronze, 2019 World Gold, 2018 World Gold, 2016 Olympic Bronze)
97 KG (213): Kyle Snyder (2021 World Silver, 2019 World Bronze, 2018 World Silver, 2017 World Gold, 2016 Olympic Gold)

Women's Freestyle:

55 KG (121): Jenna Burkert (2021 World Bronze)
59 KG (130):
65 KG (143): Forrest Molinari (2021 World Bronze)
68 KG (149): Tamyrah Mensah Stock (2021 World Bronze, 2020 Olympic Gold, 2019 World Gold, 2018 World Bronze, )
76 KG (167): Adeline Gray (2021 World Gold, 2020 Olympic Silver, World Gold in 2019, 2018, 2015, 2014, 2012)

Greco-Roman (No one in these weights has auto qualified)
55 KG
63 KG
72 KG
82 KG
130 KG

So suffice to say - it will be worth it and I cant wait!

I am excited for this and will hopefully be going. Does anytime know when tickets will be available? Also what does the schedule look like? My understanding is that it is best of three. How much time between the matches is there?

They will announce tickets soon. As far as matches, they usually go through each bracket before returning to for the second bouts. Then obviously some will have 3d bouts. I think they are supposed to have 30 minutes between matches, but i don't think that will be an issue with 15 weights.

Things are starting to shake out a little more and we are having a bit better idea of who will be competing when. Remember, the winner of Final X makes it on the US World Team and competes for the World Championships. I listed above who has autoqualified for Final X - Stillwater, including our own Daton Fix. So what's left to do to fill the remaining spots? You have to first qualify for a spot at the "Challenge Tournament" (May 21-22) which was formerly World Team Trials (which is what everyone I know still calls it, btw). Lots of wrestlers have already qualified for the Challenge Tournament, - which if you win, you go to Final X (unless there is not someone already waiting at final X - then the top two from the Challenge Tournament go)

If you have not already qualified for the Challenge Tournament, there are three chances left: Finish in the top 7 at the US Open (April 27-May 1), medal at the Pan Ams (May 5-8) or win the Last Chance Qualifier (May 13).

So it kind of looks like this

US Open -----------------------------\
Pan Ams ---------------------------- Challenge Tournament ---------- Final X --------------World Championships
Last Chance -----------------------/

Here are the Cowboys or Former Cowboys currently registered for the US Open hoping to finish in the top 7:

65 kg - Jordan Oliver (2 Seed)
65 kg - Dean Heil (7 seed)
79 kg - Dustin Plott
79 kg - Alex Dieringer (1 seed)
79 kg - Brayden Thompson
125 kg - Konner Doucet
125 kg - Derek White (10 Seed)

There may be more coming, but don't forget these guys have already qualified for the Challenge Tournament, so don't need to wrestle at the US Open (unless they want to try for the top seed at the Challenge Tournament, which you get by winning the US Open).

61 kg - Carter Young
65 kg - Jordan Oliver (Now registered)
79 kg - Alex Dieringer (Now registered)

Honestly, I'm a little surprised a couple more guys aren't registered yet for the US Open, but injuries ,etc. play a part. I'll keep you updated :)

Says A LOT when our national/international competitor alumni leave Stillwater to train. JO, Deiringer, Derek & Heil all training elsewhere. Makes me mad we have zero plan to keep star alumni competitors in Stillwater

While I of course would love to have all of our senior level guys home, there are other factors besides quality that takes our guys away. Family, spouses, job opportunities outside of wrestling all play a part. It’s not crazy to understand Stillwater, OK a might not be the best place for a 25-30 year old’s future.

With that said, our RTC is stepping up to the plate and I anticipate some of the big names staying with us in the future.

Also our best international competitor is Daton Fix by a long shot. JO was never going to stay in one place very long... and I wouldn't count him out on returning to Stillwater at some point.
