If I carried my noht's right then it seems that it would take 100 years to get that much money in quarters.

Day 1 - 1 quarter, Day 2 - 2 quarters, Day 3 - 3 quarters and so on until Day 365 - 365 quarters. I'm not gonna do the math but that's probably what they were trying to say (but failed miserably).

It's actually fairly simple to solve. He saves one quarter the first day and 365 quarters the last day. So, his average per day is 366/2=183. Multiply 183 average quarters per day by 365 days.
