Pence was on airforce 2 when his spokesman told pool reporters he was being called to an emergency meeting and they would not be flying to an event he had planned

Pence office later said on Twitter there was no emergency and Pence plans changed but wouldn't say why

At around the same time Putin had called an emergency meeting of his defense dept after a Russian Sub suffered some unknown malfunction in Russian waters resulting in a fire on board killing 14 sailors.

Putin sent officials to investigate the fire immediately

Russia claims the sub was a research vessel working for their Navy while other nations have said it was a nuclear sub and Norway has began monitoring radiation levels off their coast

100s of unverified claims on the web right now that a US sub encountered a Russian Sub in US waters off the coast of Alaska that was designed to cut underwater cables. The US sub engaged the Russian Sub and damaged it killing 14 but the Russian Sub destroyed the US Sub and was then able to limp back into Russian waters

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov spoke to reporters this morning asking about the sub saying

"The Supreme Commander-in-Chief has all the information, but this data cannot be made public, because this refers to the category of absolutely classified data," "There is classified information, this top secret is kept in the interests of a state and national security," Peskov said, insisting that "this is absolutely normal practice, when information is not revealed, there is nothing illegal here."

The Sun newspaper in the UK reporting of the 14 dead from the Russian Sub. 2 were rank of "Hero's of Russia" the highest military ranking in their military and 7 dead were all Captain First Class rank..the highest ranking captain rank in their military. Putin is quoted as saying their loss was a huge loss for the Russian Fleet and for the entire Russian Military

It is speculated to have been an A12 sub which the Pentagon has called a sabotage vehicle. It is a small sub that can actually attach itself to the belly of other subs and can dive to a depth of 6100 ft to tap or cut underwater cables. Only 5 survivors were left on the sub.

Russian news TASS is reporting the sub is now moored at a location in the Arctic and all personnel on board and everyone who is dealing with the sub have all signed NDA's

Very odd for so many high ranking officials to be in one sub

Very strange story. Like you mentioned, why would a bunch of high ranking officials do this type of work? Why would Russia be cutting underwater communication cables?

Cut the right cables and you can disable the internet to many parts of the world and cause service disruption and economic disruption to many countries.

If you ever look at the map of cables running under the worlds oceans it is pretty mind boggling.

My guess to the most likely scenario here is this was a sub doing some spy work, had an emergency with the nuke reactor, took precautions which may have resulted in an unknown amount of radioactive materials being released into the ocean. The people killed most likely killed in an event where the reactor core area is flooded with sea water to prevent a nuclear meltdown of the core.

Regardless of what they were up to, it still doesn't explain why they'd have so many top dogs on the same boat. I can't think of any reason for that, very strange.

The Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority has reported they were contacted by Moscow to inform them that there was a "gas explosion" on one of their subs in the Barents Sea (which is no where close to American waters) and informed them to monitor for increased radiation levels.

Moscow Defense Ministry is strongly denying they did this

Yeah, I doubt the US was involved in anyway with this.

Fishermen who were in the Barents Sea off the coast of Norway (fishing illegally) told The Barents Observer (a Norwegian Newspaper) they saw the spy subs Parent sub suddenly surface near where they were fishing. They said the crew members were running around the deck of the sub on the surface and looked like there was a problem.

The parent sub for this A12 small spy sub always travels with the smaller sub where the small spy sub is attached to its hull allowing access to both vehicles. The smaller A12 can then be manned and launched from the parent sub.

They said after 2 hrs a tug vessel and 2 Russian military ships showed up and they could see dead bodies being taken off the Parent sub and loaded on to the Russian Military ships and then they started hauling the parent sub North but they said they never spotted the smaller A12 sub where the incident occurred. So they either dove from the parent and recovered the bodies and the Nuclear A12 Sub with some unknown issue is on the ocean floor OR the A12 was attached to the hull of the parent sub when it surfaced and it was still submerged and they couldn't see it.

A top Russian naval officer said the 14 Russian sailors who died in a fire aboard a secretive Russian submarine last week sacrificed themselves to prevent a "catastrophe" on a planetary scale, Bloomberg reported on Monday, citing Russian media reports.

"With their lives," the unnamed Russian officer said at a funeral in St. Petersburg, Russia, "they saved the lives of their colleagues, saved the vessel and prevented a planetary catastrophe." The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who said he was unaware of the officer's comments, denied that there was any risk of a broader threat.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said last week that the submarine's nuclear reactor survived the fire because the crew took "necessary measures" to protect it, the Independent reported.

The July 1 incident remains a mystery, as Russia has declared the details a "state secret." Peskov said last week that all the information about the submarine and its mission are classified at the "highest level," ABC News reported. Even the funeral was secretive, with many in attendance refusing to show their faces or identify themselves to attending media.
