After losing four of the first seven games to Baylor under Kenny Gajewski, Oklahoma State’s softball team proved its growth and potential in a highlight-filled, three-game sweep of Baylor this weekend. Baylor is among the nation’s top 20 teams (in terms of RPI) after the sweep; they’re an incredibly talented team, which makes the Cowgirls’ performance that much more impressive.

The Cowgirls played a doubleheader Friday before sealing the sweep Sunday, and each victory was significant for different reasons. Vanessa Shippy and Emmie Robertson complemented the sweep of the Lady Bears with a sweep of the Big 12’s weekly honors, as well.

A sweep of Baylor was paired with a sweep of awards for @CowgirlSB:

– Vanessa Shippy earns her third Big 12 Player of the Week this season
(11-for-19, 6 R, 2 2B, RBI, BB)

– Emmie Robertson named the Big 12’s Pitcher of the Week
(13.1 innings, 1 run, 3 BB & 7 K) #OKState

The weekend brings OSU’s record to 32-12 with a 10-2 record in conference play. Oklahoma (38-2, 12-0) and Texas (26-15, 9-0) are the only teams ahead of the Cowgirls in the standings.

Here’s a quick look back at what happened in Cowgirl Stadium this weekend.

Friday (Game 1) – OSU 14, Baylor 6 (5 innings)

The Cowgirls began the series with an offense-filled, run-rule victory. Madi Sue Montgomery was the catalyst, as she reached base four times and finished with six RBIs. She pushed two across home plate in the first with a home run to center field before going yard again in the third. Montgomery was accountable for another run in the fifth and ranks inside the nation’s top five with 53 RBIs this season.

OSU led 8-6 entering the bottom of the fifth, but instead of waiting for the bottom of the seventh, the Cowgirls ended the game with an explosion of offense, scoring six runs. Jessi Haffner’s three-run homer put the finishing touches on the game, which marked Gajewski’s 100th victory as coach of the Cowgirls.

Friday (Game 2) – OSU 2, Baylor 1

The Cowgirls weren’t satisfied with one walkoff victory, so they went ahead and did the same in a tightly contested nightcap. Each team was scoreless entering the fifth inning. Baylor scored on an RBI single in the fifth, and they were merely three outs away from splitting the doubleheader. Instead, junior Taylor Lynch reached on an error by Baylor’s second basemen in the bottom of the seventh. The error allowed Shippy to advance to third as Maddi Holcomb scampered home to tie the game.

This allowed Montgomery’s ensuing groundout to score Shippy as the Cowgirls earned the series victory.

Emmie Robertson was stellar in the circle, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing only one run. Logan Simunek entered in the top of the seventh and quickly recorded two outs before handing the keys to the offense.

Sunday – OSU 5, Baylor 1

The Cowgirls finished the sweep of Baylor thanks to some early offense. They recorded four hits to open the game, which helped them tack three runs on the board in the first inning. They led 5-0 after scoring another pair in the second.

Samantha Clakely was impressive in the circle, holding a potent Baylor lineup to just one run in 6 2/3 innings. Clakely allowed five hits and struck out two as she improve to 13-5 on the season.

The final day of the series included a jaw-dropping catch from Maddi Holcomb in the fifth inning. The spectacular, home run-robbing snag landed at No. 2 on Sportscenter’s Top 10 Plays.
