STILLWATER — The tradition of reading the senior letters began two years ago on a Friday afternoon before Kenny Gajewski’s team hosted Oklahoma at Cowgirl Stadium.
This year, Gajewski saved the custom for the NCAA tournament. They planned to gather in the hotel in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Wednesday night, two days before they attempt to win an NCAA regional for the first time since 2011 against a field of Arkansas, Wichita State and DePaul.
At the meeting, Gajewski produces the nine envelopes containing the letters written by this year’s seniors. They’ve never been opened.
Oklahoma State’s third-year coach and the rest of the team hears what each senior’s reflection on their career and their aspirations — read by a freshman experiencing the tearful tradition for the first time. Each senior reads Gajewski’s words to them for the first time.
Four Oklahoma State players were honored. Vanessa Shippy earned first-team honors for the third straight season. Taylor Lynch and Madi Sue Montgomery were selected to the first team and and Maddi Holcomb to the second team.
