ARLINGTON, Texas — The slide was in regular rotation among those rotating through on the video board above the stage at Big 12 Media Days, mixed amid others celebrating the league’s achievements, photos of its top players, and a proclamation that the conference provides the most challenging path to the College Football Playoff.

“Six of seven bowl teams held opponents below their scoring average,” it said.

When conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby gave his opening remarks inside AT&T Stadium, he repeated the statistic.

“Contrary to popular belief, there are some kids in the Big 12 that can tackle,” Bowlsby deadpanned.

Could it be true that Big 12 defenses aren’t as bad as popular opinion suggests?

New West Virginia coach Neal Brown, who came from Troy, has seen the Big 12 from the inside, formerly as Texas Tech’s offensive coordinator.
