Interesting statistics.

Since 2009 (10 seasons)

Correlation between national rank and OSU wins.

Defense (-0.43)
Offense (-0.54)

i.e. the lower the national rank the more wins. Offense is slightly more important than defense based on this statistic.

The two seasons with our worst defense was also our two fewest wins. The offense those years was also one of our worst offensive rankings.

The two best win seasons (2010 and 2011) were two of our highest ranking offenses and the defense was right at the national average rank (#61 both years).

If we're going to win a national championship we've got to get our defense closer to the output of our offense.

Basically there have been 2 seasons in the last 10 years that our offense wasn't top 25. 2014 and 2009. There have been 2 seasons where our defense was top 50 (2009 and 2013). Looking at the numbers I honestly don't think we should ever have let Bill Young go. Glenn Spencer had a tremendous year in 2013 (our only top 20 defense of the last 10 years) and then we never did better than 65th (which was about Bill Young's worst year).

Part of the problem with defense is we play in the Big 12. Take a look at the four bowl games which featured both a Big 12 team and an SEC Team.

The four Big 12 teams averaged 36.25 points againts SEC teams who on average gave up 20.7 points a game on average.

It's tough to have a top 20-25 or better defense in the Big 12. But, we can do better and will have to do better if we are going to win a national championship.

We shouldn’t be surprised by the lengthy hiring process Gundy has only brought in 2 coordinators (OC/DC) since 2013. Yurcich was announced FEB 7th and Knowles on January 29th. I look for updates everyday but the reality is it might be a while if Gundy stays true to form.

I assume he is going to give Todd Monken every opportunity to tell him yes before he makes a move. I still think the backup plan is to promote Henson and bring in Reeder as QB coach if Monken is not available. Not really a reason to get in a hurry.

Delaying could be perceived as no confidence votes by Henson and Dunn.

Not unless Coach Gundy has kept his coaches informed. But, then again, Gundy is not one to tip his hand. So, this post is relatively useless.
I think it would be more likely a vote of no confidence if he kept them in the dark. Lay the long term plan out so they know how they fit going forward.
