If the season is played this fall, I'm not sure what else makes sense. BYU has basically no other available opponents from other conferences. The Big12 needs an 11th team. Army and Navy are farther and aren't as reliant on sports.
I agree, it's a logical move for both parties, but... logical thinking isn't what the Big 12 is known for.

And the SEC doing the most SEC-ish thing available will go from 8 conference game to 10 while trying to ensure that it keeps spots in the CFP.
So how do you decide which teams are added to your schedule ? You rank the teams 1-14 and then let #1 and #2 add teams #13 and #14; then let #3 and #4 add teams #11 and #12 . . . and on down the line.

I would have not expected anything else from them.

What am I missing here? BYU would play six Big 12 games, given the other six on their schedule?
My post was in response to the "let BYU be in the Big12 this year" post, i.e. 10 games.

But to your post, I don't think BYU would travel to Big12 country for all 6 of their replacement games, so yes still valid that would be long trips for some Big12 schools.

And if only 6 games with BYU, what do the other 4 Big 12 teams do for a 10th Power 5.

That's adding a lot of travel for BYU and for half the Big12 schools that would have to go up to SLC
BYU already travels a lot (they were going to Northern Illinois as an example). They'll soon be in the same boat as Notre Dame where they either miss just about all of their schedule or join a conference if only for a year. PAC 12 doesn't need them and we're the next best thing.

Also, it's no different from WVUs travel schedule, except they'd have to play each other and have a fairly long flight.

Has there ever been a coherent reason why we don't add BYU as a football only member anyway?
They are a competitive team, They fill up a stadium bigger than most Big 12 schools. I really don't think the not playing on Sundays thing is a big issue. It's actually not a bad idea.

They have good fan support, but they pretty much suck, and would add no value to the conference.

This is interesting. Apparently some Big 12 schools still want a full 12 game season.

Big 12 football schedule 2020: League split between 12-game, 10-game options for this season
The Big 12's athletic directors were split Friday while meeting to recommend which scheduling model the conference should use in a 2020 season that remains in flux amid the coronavirus pandemic. The conference is currently considering two primary options: a complete 12-game season or a 10-game schedule including one non-conference opponent, several league sources tell CBS Sports.

12 is stupid. Go with 10 like everyone else (except ACC). Start a little later to allow things to hopefully get better (certainly won't be as hot !!).

Go with one non-con Group of 5 or BYU.
But understand if you play only conf games it gives the league total control of the schedule during the season (maybe even with BYU if they were granted one year member status).

Another thing to consider; Not sure if you've been watching NBA and MLB ( I watch my Lakers and Dodgers) these crowd-less games are boring to watch; So yeah, I know we all love OSU, but it ain't the same thing.

It has a very O'Doul's feel to it;
