I remember wondering who was going to be the next high flyer to send GIA into a frenzy with consistent run throughs for dunks after Mason left. Then I saw us open the 2000 season against UMKC at the Maybee Center and I immediately knew that role would become Melvin Sanders’.
Melvin was a physical specimen. He was a 7' high jumper in high school. He was crazy fast, super quick laterally and was strong at the same time. His first year it seemed like he couldn't shoot or dribble but man could he defend. Lots of steals and dunks. Got to where he could make the catch and shoot shot before he left.
Nice to see him doing well past basketball. I remember reading an article about him training Dak during his rookie year and the hours he was putting in for his job.
