Former Oklahoma State standout Randy Rutherford was hired Thursday as McLain’s boys basketball coach, pending Tulsa Public Schools board approval.

Rutherford, a Broken Bow native, helped the Cowboys reach the Final Four in 1995 as he averaged 19.6 points and 8.4 rebounds. He finished his OSU career averaging 15.6 points and 5.1 rebounds in 99 games.

“He has worked with a lot of the kids there at McLain as a personal basketball trainer,” TPS athletic director Gil Cloud said. “He has coached in TPS, at the junior college and major college levels, and played eight years professionally. He’s got a good picture of what it takes to develop young players and older ones as they go through the program.”
