Testimony in Jussie Smollett case scrapped after "Hail Mary" phone call
CBS News has learned that a last-minute phone call may have saved "Empire" star Jussie Smollett from potentially being indicted. Last month, the actor claimed he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack as he walked home in the middle of the night. Two brothers have now told Chicago police Smollett paid them to stage the assault.
A source close to the investigation tells CBS News the brothers were set to appear in front of a grand jury Tuesday. But CBS News correspondent Dean Reynolds reports those plans were abruptly scrapped after a "Hail Mary" call from Smollett's defense team.
It's unclear what the defense said, but the Cook County state's attorney decided to postpone the brothers' testimony, which would have been the first step toward indicting the 36-year-old actor for filing a false police report.
So they're saying that the brothers told police the reason he staged the attack was bc there wasn't enough reaction to the racist letter he'd received the week earlier... Even better, they told police he sent the letter to himself... This dude is twisted...
“Felony criminal charges have been approved by @CookCountySAO against Jussie Smollett for Disorderly Conduct / Filing a False Police Report. Detectives will make contact with his legal team to negotiate a reasonable surrender for his arrest,” police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said on Twitter.
The more they up their maniacal agenda of demonizing and dehumanizing Trump supporters, the more it seems to backfire. There was an episode of the Murphy Brown reboot where a journalist was beaten into a coma at a Trump rally by Trump supporters, even though the instigators at Trump rallies during the campaign were Bernie plants. As karma would have it, Murphy Brown was only on for five weeks.
Quick send this to CNN, Anderson Cooper will break in with the breaking news "Cook County Police are stifling a performance artist's realistic portrayal of a gay black man in MAGA country" If you get it to his attorneys they might even pay you for that brilliance, I'm really surprised they haven't tried that line.
What a complete sack of crap this guy is and those that jumped to his defense need to take a long look in the mirror...
Johnson said that Smollett sent himself the ransom-style letter that appeared prior to the Jan. 29 incident. "When that didn't work, Smollett paid $3500 to stage this attack and drag Chicago's reputation through the mud in the process," he said, later confirming that police have seen the check Smollett wrote to pay off two men.
