For the last 10 days Kilauea had opened up 20 lava fissures in neighbor hoods that had forced residents to be evacuated from the fissures area and dozens of homes were burned.

However, the situation was upgraded to a red alert for an imminent major eruption yesterday from the USGS as the volcano drastically changed.

Smoke and Ash plums are now reaching 12,000 ft into the air

This wasn't already a major eruption?
Not until yesterday...it is the most active volcano on Earth so the events so far haven't been out of the scope of possibility.....however now the USGS is expecting an explosive eruption to occur which hasn't happened since 1924 at Kileuea It happens when the lava hits the water table and creates steam pressure to build and explode...launching car sized bolders and gobs of lava weighing in excess of 100+lbs into the air

The last explosive eruption of Kileuea threw bolders, ash, debris etc over an 18 mile radius of the island
