WNIT eligibility: Overall record of .500 or better. Isn't that correct?

The Cowgirls need a win here to secure a overall winning record.

Otherwise, they will need a first round win in BIG12 tournament. A second round win will secure a winning record. A second round loss will put them at .500.

Even then, they will be clawing for a WNIT bid, depending on what happens with the other teams during the final conference games.

Is my math correct? Perhaps they can pull it off. Texas didn't look exceptionally crisp against Baylor last night. Best of luck to them!

UT has been struggling lately, but no more than the Cowgirls. You're math is correct in that OSU needs 1 more win to qualify for the WNIT. IF OSU qualifies for the WNIT, they will get invited. Their SOS and RPI remain very good despite the bad record. OSU has been was somehow on the bubble of the NCAA tournament a few weeks ago. But even then I was concerned about them qualifying for the WNIT.

OSU still has an outside shot at the 6 seed in the Big 12 tournament. Cowgirl win and WVU loss puts OSU into the 6 seed. That would also secure a WNIT invite.

The most likely final game scenarios end up with a Bedlam first round matchup in the Big 12 Tournament.

An Oklahoma loss and KU win would get the KU/OSU matchup in the 8/9 game.

Crazy....all those McDonald’s all-Americans and highly regarded athletes and yet they’re still average...at least according to their fans. The amount of all Americans they’ve lost over the last few years is unbelievable. This is the same Texas team that’s beaten Stanford and Tennessee, but lost to Kansas. It’s a winnable game...question is do we make shots?

The Cowgirls are now 15-15 and 6-12.

Jim Littell’s Big 12 record is currently 76-86 in his ninth season.

The Cowgirls must win the first round game in the Big 12 tournament to be eligible for the WNIT.

Iowa State just stunned #2 Baylor 57-56 in Ames. It’s only Baylor’s second loss of the season and first in the conference.

Baylor hadn’t lost a regular season conference game since 2016-17 when they went 17-1.

I was shocked (but happy) that the refs called a foul on Baylor with one second left in a tie game. Coach Mulkey was rather upset with the call (that’s an understatement)!

Texas has parted ways with head coach Karen Aston. Her contract ended and was not renewed.

Aston will leave Texas after 8 seasons with a record of 184-83 overall and 93-51 in conference.

The Longhorns were 19-11 (11-7 Big 12) and set to make a 7th straight NCAA tournament appearance this season.

Aston led the Longhorns to a 31-5 record and an Elite 8 appearance in 2016.

2014: NCAA Second Round
2015: NCAA Sweet 16
2016: NCAA Elite 8
2017: NCAA Sweet 16
2018: NCAA Sweet 16
2019: NCAA First Round
2020: Tournament canceled

Did they fire her for her record? Or for another reason? That record doesn't say "fire her" to me. Wonder if it's the Baylor affect?

Vic Schaefer is leaving Miss State to become the new HC at Texas. I didn't think Texas would make this move unless they had a guy in place.

Texas was tired of not being competitive with Baylor. In eight seasons Aston was 1-18 against Baylor. Texas is 1-22 against Baylor in the past 10 seasons.

Texas wants to win conference titles and national titles. That won’t happen until they are able to beat Baylor. Baylor has been the only relevant program in the conference for too long now.

Aston had a reputation as a great recruiter even before she was hired at Texas. At one point she had 10 McDonald’s All Americans on the Texas roster. But she never won a Big 12 title.

Here are the results of the past 6 seasons under Aston:

2014-15 Texas 24-11 / 9-9 Big 12 [3rd] NCAA Sweet 16
2015-16 Texas 31-5 / 15-3 Big 12 [2nd] NCAA Elite Eight
2016-17 Texas 25-9 / 15-3 Big 12 [2nd] NCAA Sweet 16
2017-18 Texas 28-7 / 15-3 Big 12 [2nd] NCAA Sweet 16
2018-19 Texas 23-10 / 12-6 Big 12 [3rd] NCAA First Round
2019-2020 Texas 19-11 / 11-7 Big 12 [3rd]

I love this move! It shows that Texas is serious. Schaefer took Mississippi State from a nobody to a national power in his eight seasons there. Before that Schaefer was an assistant to Gary Blair at Texas A&M. He was Blair’s defensive guru.

Finally there’s a chance for some drama in the Big 12. It should no longer be a cakewalk for the Lady Bears.

Life just got a lot harder for the rest of the Big 12’s average and below average coaches as they battle it out for third place.

Coach Aston was making $515,000 with an Elite 8 and three Sweet 16 appearances at Texas.

Coach Littell is making $600,000 with one Sweet 16 appearance in 2014 at OSU.

I don’t think Kim Mulkey has become complacent in any manner at Baylor, but this hire will definitely energize her to keep Baylor at the top of the conference and the nation which is bad news for the rest of the conference. The fan support for the women’s team at MSU was amazing under the Schaefer regime ( I attended the first round games down there in 2018 when the Cowgirls played). It will be interesting to see what the support will be at Texas.

It was a home run hire for them. Schafer is a Houston native that spent 9 years with Gary Blair as an assistant at Texas A&M before finally landing at miss state. Miss State actually matched the offer financially, but coming back home to be closer to family was too hard to resist.

Chris Del Conte has been god send for Texas’s athletic department. He’s made several home run hires and goes after big fish. Karen Aston did a solid job, but I’ve heard there’s a lot of meddling from administrators that made the job difficult the last several years. It’ll be interesting to see who Leaves/stays once he shows up.

In terms for OSU, doesn’t change anything. We need to worrying about making the tourney on a annual basis. We’re not Baylor or Texas, but doesn’t mean we can’t have success. Coaches are still looking for a possible grad transfer but so far nothing. You might see them kick back the last scholarship to the 2021 class. We have 3 kids in the 2020 class. Two have signed and the 3rd will sign on the April 15th spring signing period. No one is transferring out of the program, which is a good thing. Just have to continue developing the talent we have.
