So after hearing loads of high praise for Baker Mayfield and the proclamations of him being the odd's on favorite as OU starting QB, I decided to take a look at his numbers for the first time. If you're like me, you'll be surprised at how underwhelming he really was, despite the hype you tend to hear amongst media/OU fans.

Against Nonconf opponents (SMU, Stephen F Austin, Texas State)
Cmp/Attempts/Completion%/TD/INT/Passer Rating:

78 / 110 / 70.6% / 7 / 1 / 156.47

Against Big XII Competition (TCU, Kansas, Kansas State, Baylor, Texas)

140 / 230 / 60.8% / 5 / 8 / 111.44

By comparison, here are the list of Quarterbacks that had a better Quarterback Rating (2013):
Bryce Petty - 174.3
Jake Waters - 156.8
David Webb - 139.1
Clint Chelf - 132.8
Blake Bell - 132.2 (Ironically identified as a Tight End)
J.W. Walsh - 128.8
Baker Mayfield - 127.7

Trevor Knight's numbers in Big XII competition last year (for comparison) (WVU, TCU, Baylor, Texas, Kansas State, Iowa State)

102 / 178 / 57.3% / 10 / 7 / 130.3

J.W. Walsh number in Big XII competition (2013) for comparison:

54 / 106 / 50.9% / 4 / 4 / 110.6

To summarize, Baker Mayfield is another Trevor Knight/J.W. Walsh, except a little more accurate but without the mobility. If he's anything other than average, Lincoln Riley deserves much praise.

According to OU fans and players, Trevor Knight was the next J. Manziel. So my question is, what's the hyperbole on Baker Mayfield?

His numbers on the field may be similar, but IMO JW and Knight are light years ahead on character. BM looks soft the way he left Lubbock and showed up to OU unannounced.

What kind of name is "Baker" anyway....that's a profession, not a name.

Jeezus Keerist, the season cannot get here soon enough for my liking.

I just like how he parties. I was in Gulf Shores last week and saw one of the straw hats Baker was partying in over spring break. I almost got it, but I can't live up to that type of hype.
